When thousands of anglers log catches, species, timing, and conditions, those observations reveal patterns that a few surveys can’t—showing where fish thrive, where they struggle, and how waters change through the seasons. Aggregated and anonymized, this data helps wildlife agencies target habitat restoration, set smarter regulations and stocking plans, and detect issues like invasive species or drought stress sooner. The result is faster, data-driven conservation that protects fisheries while keeping every angler’s secret spots private.

An app made for serious anglers

Fly anglers track the variables that matter. TroutBook turns your on-water notes into clear patterns—so every trip starts smarter and ends with better decisions.

  • Fish like a technician. Log the details in seconds. Fly patterns, water type, flow, temp, weather, and a precise pin—so you can reproduce success, not guess it.
  • Learn from every catch. Auto-organized stats by river, month, flow and temp highlight what’s working, your top flies and waters, and how conditions affect results.
  • Give back to the resource. Opt-in to share de-identified catch observations to public datasets and fisheries partners—helping science and stewardship while keeping your exact spots private.

Frequently Asked Questions

How private are my saved locations?

Your saved locations are private by default—only you can see exact pins and coordinates. If you choose to contribute to science, TroutBook sends anonymized, aggregated trends (never precise coordinates) to help agencies understand fish health and water conditions.

What exactly do I log for a catch?

Snap a photo and let TroutBook’s AI vision pre-fill your log. It analyzes the image and metadata to suggest species, provide a length estimate (you can correct it), and capture fly/rig cues when visible. Date, time, and weather are auto-pulled; you can add notes and edit anything before saving. The model improves as you confirm suggestions, and photos stay private unless you choose to share.

Do I need service on the water?

No. You can log catches and drop pins offline. When you’re back in range, TroutBook syncs safely to your account. You can also tap a saved spot to open directions in Apple Maps when service is available.

Will TroutBook tell me where to fish?

TroutBook isn’t a hotspotter, and you don't need more people fishing at your hard-earned spots. TroutBook is a learning log for technical anglers—built to help you read your own water, refine patterns, and improve decisions based on your time outside.

How accurate are the map pins?

Pins store precise GPS coordinates on your device and account. You can rename spots, edit coordinates, add notes, and one-tap “View” to center the map or launch Apple Maps for driving directions.

How does my data help conservation?

TroutBook aggregates your logs into anonymous, high-level summaries—think catch rates by species, seasonal timing, and broad waterbody trends. We never share exact pins or personal details. To protect sensitive waters, we apply spatial fuzzing (coarse location bins), minimum sample thresholds, and time-window aggregation before anything is published.

We use these summaries to support partners across the conservation landscape:

  • Federal agencies (e.g., fish & wildlife, parks, science services) can request dashboards or periodic exports to inform monitoring, restoration, and invasive-species alerts.

  • State fish & wildlife departments get seasonal trend lines, species presence/absence signals, and creel-style indicators to complement traditional surveys.

  • Local watershed groups & land trusts can access water-specific insights to prioritize habitat projects and post-fire or drought recovery.

We also run targeted programs (voluntary, opt-in) like redd counts, invasive sightings, or special-regulations waters where additional guardrails apply. Data is used only for public-good purposes and is never sold.

Anglers building for anglers

TroutBook started as our own logbook, a simple way to remember what worked, where, and why. It grew into a tool that helps you learn from every day on the water and turns those lessons into better days ahead.

We built TroutBook because we wanted an honest fishing journal that actually teaches you something. Each catch you record helps you spot patterns., flies, flows, weather, water temps so your next trip is smarter than your last. We aggregate anonymous summaries for wildlife agencies who are stretched thin, giving them tens of thousands of extra data points they can’t collect alone. especially when budgets and politics get in the way of conservation.

Our promise: anglers first, privacy always, conservation as the outcome.
